Winding through the picturesque landscape of Kananaskis Country, the Kananaskis River is a great whitewater experience for families and group outings. Conveniently located 45 minutes west of Calgary in the front ranges of the Canadian Rocky Mountains, this river offers the novice rafter a thrilling and fun introduction to whitewater rafting.

What you can expect

Tour departs at 1:30 pm from Nakoda Lakeside Lodge. Arrive early to get the paper work out of the way - Sign release/waiver prior to the trip. Trained guides explain and demonstrate paddle, safety and emergency techniques.

Kick off into grade 1 through 3 rapids. Expect to get wet with lots of laughter. Witness the occasionally wildlife, maybe an Osprey or Bald Eagle.

Light refreshment and snacks after the tour as the tour ends at 5:30 pm

  • Chinook definition of Class 1 - "Very relaxing.” Gentle, moving water Very small waves requiring little or no maneuvering
  • “Chinook definition of Class 2 - "You may get splashed.” Regular waves, easy to see, may reach 3 to 4 feet in height. Avoiding rocks, river bends or other obstacles may require simple maneuvering

Driving directions

  • Travel east on Highway #1 (Trans Canada Highway) towards Calgary
  • Exit onto ‘South Ranch Road (Exit 114 Seebe/Exshaw Hwy 1X)
  • Then turn left (north) towards Seebe/Exshaw & Hwy 1A
  • Drive 3 km north on Hwy 1X and then turn right (east) on the 1A Highway towards Cochrane / Calgary
  • Nakoda Lakeside Lodge is located 6 km from the turnoff on the right hand side



  • Minimum Age: 12 years
  • Minimum Weight: 90 lbs
  • Maximum Weight:350 lbs
  • Any guest under 18 years of age will also need a Parent / Guardian signature on the waiver form and an Emergency Contact Number if the Parent / Guardian is not joining them on the river
  • If the guest is unaccompanied by an adult the minimum age is 16 years old, but the parent must be at Nakoda Lakeside Lodge to sign the waiver
  • A release/waiver must be signed prior to the trip and is a condition of participation

Cancellation / Refund

  • 48 hour cancellation policy for individual bookings.
  • 7 days for groups of 9 or more.
  • Chinook Rafting reserves the right to cancel any trips due to adverse water, weather and related conditions or insufficient bookings; a full refund will be made available in this event
